Blue Pelican was created and opened by Jenn in 2005.

Jenn Johnson, Blue Pelican’s owner and Hatteras Village native, creates most of the work in the shop. We also feature work from other local artists/artisans and craftspeople. When we want to share something that we can’t get locally, we look first for North Carolina crafters. Then, we expand our search to American artisans making unique and limited production items. We care about made in the USA, sustainability, and about supporting other small businesses.

This place isn’t like any other place we’ve seen!

This is our favorite and most often repeated comment from our guests.

Fifteen years later, our vision at Blue Pelican is the same. We want to give you a relaxing, welcoming place to visit, enjoy rooms full of beautiful and inspiring art, crafts and yarn. Hopefully we will also entice you to take home a unique and special “something” to preserve your memory of a visit to our beautiful Outer Banks. Our mission is to present products and displays in a way that you have never seen before.

What’s that about YARN?

And…the “and Yarn” part of our name?  We have two rooms of the 1950’s house that is home to our local small business, full to the gills with yarn and more.  We also have handmade buttons you can’t find anywhere else. You may discover kits for crochet, knitting and fiber arts.  You should make the trip to visit us if you’re in the area, if only to learn more about just how cleverly we have filled up the shop.

About Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

From the ocean to the sound, and the night sky where you can still see the Milky Way, the Outer Banks and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore have a lot to offer. This includes inspirational views, animals in their natural habitat, and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the ocean and sound. We are surrounded by enough wonder and beauty to inspire us every single day.

Miles and Miles of Unspoiled Beaches

Hatteras Island is part of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It is a barrier island with seven small villages surrounded by miles of National Park. Locals care about the beaches, our visitors, and our rich heritage. Hatteras Island is the southernmost village on the island. That’s where you will find Blue Pelican Gallery Gifts and Yarn.
