Tanya Casteel is a full-time artist and author in Asheville, North Carolina. She studied at the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, and has a Masters from the University of Southern Maine. She is a past Regional Emerging Artist in Resident at Artspace in NC, and a recipient of an NC United Arts Council Grant.
As an artist, writer & intuitive seer, I strive to create beauty to inspire others to feel more connected to themselves, nature, and each other. I want to help others live from a more authentic place and to create their own meaning. I love to study animals and draw wisdom from the way they move through our world to improve the way I engage with humanity.
I’m interested in the tension that’s created when we dance with what WE want to happen VS what actually WANTS to happen. As I paint, I play with this balance by creating an animal container for water, color, and energy to flow in. Then I bring these skills forth to practice in my everyday life.
I offer my art as a source of inspiration to help you connect with nature. Leading you to discover and listen to your own intuition, which encourages you to express your unique gifts to the world. Let your intuition speak through your imagination!

Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, North Carolina
From the ocean to the sound, and the night sky where you can still see the Milky Way, the Outer Banks and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore offer inspirational views, animals in their natural habitat, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the ocean, and enough wonder and beauty to inspire us every single day.
Jennifer Johnson, Blue Pelican’s owner and Hatteras Village native, creates most of the work in the shop. We also feature work from other local artists/artisans and craftspeople. When we want to share something that we can’t get locally, we look first for North Carolina crafters and then expand our search to American artisans making unique and limited production items.
And…the “and Yarn” part of our name? We have two rooms of the 1950’s house that is home to our local small business, full to the gills with yarn and more. We also have handmade buttons you can’t find anywhere else, kits for crochet, knitting and fiber arts. You should make the trip to see us if you’re in the area, if only to see just how cleverly we have filled up the shop. If you want to learn knitting, weaving, crochet, macrame or any other kind of fiber art, we have a teacher who would love to talk more with you.
